The holidays are upon us. This means tons of fun, but it also means big changes in our routines and habits.
Many of these changes are just naturally not as healthy as our normal way of living. (No one should be tempted with this much sugar!)
When it comes to the holidays, how can you keep your health in a good spot? We’re glad you asked!
From our team at Primora Primary Care, here are five tips for managing your health during the holidays.
That sugar we mentioned earlier? It’s a problem, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have any. Just be sensible: take small portions and only eat them once in a while. Fill your plate mainly with healthier options, like fruits and vegetables. If you’re invited to a party, bring a healthy dish so you’ll have at least one option.
Eating well supports your immune and digestive systems and helps you manage your weight, all of which are critical during the holiday season.
Keep your body moving! Even small amounts of activity each day make a difference in providing health benefits. Don’t always hunt for the closest parking spot — park farther away and walk. Take stairs when you can. Cold air might discourage you from going outside, but dress in layers and you should be fine!
So much around the holidays tends to focus on eating. Try focusing on a few activities that aren’t centered on food. Go ice skating, visit a museum, volunteer in the community, and go for family walks together. It’s healthy to direct your attention to something that doesn’t involve food — don’t be afraid to try.
The holidays are a great time for warm drinks (hot chocolate and cider, anyone?), but keep water as your primary beverage. Not only will 4-6 cups of water a day help you stay hydrated, it’ll strengthen your immune system to help fight off germs and keep you healthy. Drinking a glass of water with and between meals is an easy way to boost your health.
One of the best ways to avoid getting sick during the social holiday season is exactly what your mother told you to do: wash your hands. You can pick up germs from just about everything you touch, so wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds at a time.
If you do get sick over the holidays and want to bounce back as soon as possible, our team at Primary Primary Care is ready to help. To schedule a quick appointment, call our Bridgeville office or use our easy online scheduler to book your own time.
